How to fix a clogged drain and sink

If water is draining slowly or not at all, the floor drain or sink trap is most likely clogged with hair and dirt. The good news is you can usually fix this yourself.

Clogged floor drain

  1. Remove the grate covering the drain.
  2. Take out the drain cup inside the drain (some need to be twisted, others lift straight up).
  3. Remove hair and dirt and throw it in a trash bag.
  4. Rinse the drain cup with water.
  5. Put the drain cup and grate back in place. Make sure the cup is fitted properly. This prevents bad smells from the drain.

Clogged sink

If the water drains slowly or stops completely, the problem is usually a blocked water trap (U-bend) under the sink.

Step 1: Clean the water trap

You will need:
  1. A bucket
  2. A trash bag
  3. Rubber gloves
What to do:
  1. Locate the water trap under the sink.
  2. Place the bucket underneath it.
  3. Carefully unscrew the bottom part of the water trap.
  4. Let the water and debris drain into the bucket.
  5. Remove dirt and clean the water trap.
  6. Make sure the seal is properly in place before screwing the water trap back on tightly.

Step 2: Dispose of the waste properly

  1. Pour the water from the bucket into the toilet.
  2. Throw hair and debris in a trash bag.
⚠️ Do not flush hair or debris down the sink or toilet. This can cause another blockage.
